The San Diego Comic-Convention is a gathering of nerds that seems to grow every year. Or at least my envy of not being able to go does. I mean, seriously; how do people afford the $500 plane tickets plus the entry tickets, plus the onslaught of irresistible merch? SERIOUSLY? Anyways, it’s a great place to see what’s new in my world. What began as a silly comic book convention has grown to TV shows, movies, and just about anything and everything.
With that being said, it’s hard to stay updated for such a massive event. Luckily I’m here to waste my time and excitement explaining everything announced and break it all down for you. I plan to update this article throughout the event (it ends Saturday), so make sure to stay tuned to my Twitter or Facebook pages for updates.
Pro Tip: Let me start by saying, if you missed the announcement; Bungie’s worldwide beta for their upcoming Beta is now available to everyone on all platforms. It is highly recommended to start the 13GB install while you finish reading my article. If the download isn’t finished by the time you’re done you can read up on my initial reaction. You’re welcome.
Jhonen Vasquez’s Filler Bunny
The mastermind behind Invader Zim, Johnny The Homicidal Maniac, Squee, I Feel Sick and the upcoming Very Important House released his first comic in over 7 years. Sure, it’s a collection of sorts but it features brand new issues of Filler Bunny (a filler panel from JTHM turned into stand alone series) and is something to be gawked over.
Robert Kirkman and the rest of Skybound comics had a lot to say while they kept their mouths shut about everything. With a comic/TV/video game series there’s not much that can be said about the future since Kirkman loves nothing more than to keep us all guessing. Things that were said was that the comic is superior (duh), that Kirkman had another 200 issues planned, that tthe show would bring more of it’s comic roots and that Negan still hasn’t been cast. So who knows what’s in store for Rick Grimes new world (comics) or Season 5 of the much beloved television series. Day 2 Update: The AMC panel was held today. The trailer was released for Season 5 and we got it below:
Community got a lot of attention at SDCC year. Between the dramatic renewal and confusion on the cast return; everyone had their eyes had their eyes on the panel. Basically, all you need to know is that production on the show is starting this summer but the show may not air on Yahoo Screen until early 2015. No details were said on who’s returning, but Donald Glover (Childish Gambino) was mentioned saying “Troy’s out there somewhere. He may be in peril. That’s what movies are made of.” hinting that he may not return for Season 6 but could be the focal point of the featured film. It was also joked that Alison Brie may not be returning, even though Season 5 ended on a high note for Jeff (Joel Mchale) & Annie (Brie). Other than that all you need to know is that it’s returning on weekly schedule; despite it’s now digital release. From all of the live blogs I’ve read; it appears the panel was down right hilarious, so if you see it posted online; don’t be hesitant to watch the entire thing. But who knows if someone is going to upload it or not. Update:Thanks to guys at Flicks And The City the entire panel is now live.
Although most of this news was announced before Comic-Con’s official opening, it’s still being highlighted throughout the halls of SDCC. Even though The Simpsons were celebrating 25 years, they had more than enough to talk about in the upcoming season. Between a Family Guy spinoff featuring Bob Belcher (of Bob’s Burgers), another crossover with Futurama, a teased major character death, FXX marathoning the entire series, and Fox making available online to all afterwards, there’s a lot going on in four-fingered universe. Day 3 Update: 5 minutes of the “The Simpsons Guy” Family Guy crossover was released and available for viewing.
Halo (Day 2)
343 Industries had a lot to talk about, but announcements were scarce. The released the “Nightfall” (a straight to Xbox movie coming soon) trailer. Halo: Nightfall is centered around Agent Locke, who is also confirmed as playable in the upcoming video game sequel Halo: Guardians. Along with the movie and sequel in the hopper, they were sure to give us some more “Master Chief Collection” information. What exactly? Well, they confirmed Zanzibar (above) as an upscale HD map. And that’s about it. With everything going on, everyone assumed 343i would have more to talk about.
Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice (Day 3)
This movie has a lot of talk but not a lot of hype. Another re-imagining of the Batman universe, and Superman; a hero people just don’t want to go see in theaters. Between Ben Afleck playing Bruce Wayne and Gal Gadot portraying Wonder Woman in her first legitimate big screen production. Although SDCC only gave us another look at Afleck in costume, and a teaser trailer, not much else was announced. There are ways of seeing the trailer, showing Superman and a more cartoonish Bane (VS the Christopher Nolan film), but we’re still hoping the teaser if officially released since the best available is a cam quality filming from the crowd.
A lot of things didn’t have enough information or anything set in stone so they were only mentioned or teased. Here I’m going to leave anything that could be summed up in one sentence.
Batman ’66; the complete series being released on BluRay.
Hannibal Season 3 to focus more on the novels, but still no insight on the Silence Of The Lambs arc of Clarice Starling.
Jack Black stars as R.L. Stine in upcoming Goosebumps movie set to be released in fall 2015.
Adam Sandler discuss “Pixels”; a movie where heroes have to take back New York city from the classic 1970 video game characters (Frogger, Q*Bert, Galaga, Pac-Man, Donkey Kong, and more).
George R. R. Matin teases upcoming comic book series “In The House Of Worm”.
Original “Goonies” cast reunited to tease possible sequel.
Marvel Comics teases Fantastic Four reboot.
Flash & Constantine were screened and well relieved.
Day 3: Godzilla 2 was announced.
Day3: King Kong movie was teased.
Various Movie Posters
Although most upcoming films don’t feature discussion panels to avoid any major spoilers, that doesn’t mean they aren’t being hyped all over the place. I’ve collected some of the most talked about posters, which may or may not get you stoked for the real deal If you want more information on any of the movies feel free to ask in the comments or Google at will.
